By Tom Agnes

Headbands are a type of hair accessory that is used to hold the hair from getting over the eyes and in the face. It is mainly worn around the forehead or in the hair.

They are usually of two types:

Rounded or oval shaped and (ii) Horse shoe shaped

Rounded or oval shaped are mainly made from clothes or rubbers and are worn by sportsmen and athletes.

Horse shoe shaped are mainly in the shape of U and have come to the limelight after the mentioning of it in the 1871 popular novel "Through the Looking Glass" (a sequel to Alice in Wonderland) where the main character Alice was frequently seen wearing this specific type of bands.

However, there another type that are introduced in the category during the long ancient ages. This style includes a straight rope style band made from either some metals like gold, silver or brass or even from clothes with jewels curved at the front side of it.

This type have to be worn in an around the forehead by tying it two of its ends with one another through hooks or other arrangement. These types are mainly obsolete except for special occasions like marriage ceremony of certain castes and religion that have this type to be worn during the event.

People from certain Asian cities are seen wearing this type during their marriage ceremony and even flower headbands following this similar concept of wearing is followed during their marriage ceremony.

Wearing of headbands has drastically deteriorated in this modern era, but it was not so even in the 80s. Wearing them during that time by women, especially young girls and ladies were considered to be a great fashion statement that was considered to transform a girl into a much bubblier cuter look.

Most men wore them (mainly the round shaped ones or the straight roped styled ones) to express a feeling of machismo characteristic. As such, the round shaped headbands are considered to be worn by the tough guys and mostly the goons. However, these types of headbands were also worn by the athletes and sportsman.

Various sports like cricket, basketball, soccer, table tennis, lawn tennis and badminton witnessed the players wearing rounded shaped during the time of playing. This were mainly worn by players for not to depict any toughness but to help out sweats from not reaching their eyes. This is the reason for calling these rounded shaped ones as sweatbands.

Nowadays, soccer players like Ronaldinho, Adebayor, etc. wear head bands but those are mainly the horse shoe type to keep their hairs falling over their eyes and skin. You will see tennis player Rafael Nadal wearing round shaped while going out to play lawn tennis.

Although a little bit on the obsolete side, but still at certain fields and places you can still see people wearing headbands to serve the purpose.
